Birendra Krishna Bhadra

Birendra Krishna Bhadra was the most sought after person in All India Radio Kolkata, which was then at 1,Garstin place, Kolkata. He was a superb broadcaster in every sense. Script Writer, Dramatist, Actor, Producer, and Presenter, Interviewer a complete broadcaster. He produced great radio dramas based on classic bengali literature. His dramas based on historical novels of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhya & other writers in many of which he acted, still remanins unsurpassed in their depth of meaning & breathtaking dramatic sweep.
Many great stage & film actors of that period were brought into All India Radio by him. Ahindranath Choudhury (stage-actor), Chabi Biswas(film-actor), they all revered Birendra Krishna Bhadra and acknowledged their debt to him for teaching them the art of radio acting.

His radio presentation of Birupaksher Asar broadcast every Sunday at 1.00 Pm created sensation among the common man. In these programmes he talked about the travails of the common man in their day to day existence. It's Chapilensque humour touched the hearts of young and old in equal intensity. For rural audience, his serialized readings Mahbharater Katha from the Mahabhart epic, was a tremendous hit with the rural & urban listeners alike.

But the crowning glory of his career in All India Radio Kolkata was his participation as a narrator in Mahishasura Mardini the special dawn programme broadcast every year on 'Mahalaya' at 4.00 Am from All India Radio Kolkata. Initially, it was broadcast live form the studio later a live programme was recorded and is still broadcast today. His emotionally charged chanting of 'Sri Sri Chandi' & its Bengali translation the invocation of Godess Durga, filled the hearts of millions in divine glory. As it does today.

In the 1970s an alternate recording of Mahishasur Mardini was made with Govinda Gopal Mukherji, Uttam Kumar (reluctantly agreed, assuming the gravity of the programme) with great Lata Mangeskar as the principal singer. However by popular demand the original version of 'Mahishasura Mardini'was reinstated.

A brilliant composer he single handedly composed signature tunes of almost all prorammes including Mahila Mahal(Women's Programme),Galpa Dadur Asar (Children's Programme),Mazdoor Mandali(Worker's Programme), Sishu Mahal (another Children's Programmeand a host of other tunes.

Kazi Sabyasachi, son of famous Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was a Staff Announcer of All India Radio Kolkata. His mellifluous base voice charmed one and all. He was the pioneer of Bengali Recitation and many followed his way of recitation but could hardly match his immense God gifted talent. He has recored many Bengali recitations on HMV label and still is in much demand. He died at an early age & is buried inBangladesh.

He composed music for Mahishashuar Mardini the famous dawn programme broadcast every year on 'Mahalaya' at 4.00 AM from All India Radio Kolkata. He also conducted 'Sangeet Sikshar Asar'.the then very popular music lessons programme broadcast every Sunday in the morning transmission.

Famous Actor/Producer of Bengali Theatre was associated with All India Radio Kolkata both as an actor and producer of Radio dramas. He participated in more than twenty radio dramas broadcast from All India Radio Kolkata. His landmark production for All India Radio Kolkata was Tagore's Rakta Karabi. Besides participating in recitations he acted in various radio dramas broadcast from All india Radio Kolkata. Among others was his brilliant performances in Tatinitr Bichar, Pata Jhorey Jay & Badal Sarkar's Ebong Indrajit.

These illustrated talks were repeatedly broadcast on popular demand. The stormy petrel of Bengali Cinema, Rwittik Ghatak produced radio drama Jwala roughly translated 'Pain' was literally a searing production.
